about

Secret Wilderness

Jake Reid explores his shoegaze past on this third release as Secret Wilderness. Stomp box driven drum machines crank electro and house beats, blissed out FM synths create layers of mechanical psychedelia.

Ivan Howard (Howard Ivans/The Rosebuds) guest vocals on Can’t Be Found lending layers of vocals next to cold vocoders and scorching acid lines. Doggerland sounds like the Cocteau Twins experimenting in Ibiza and Sunlit slips into Ashra/Cluster territory where synths crackle and smudge off analog tape. Musique Brocante wraps up the side and contains catchy synth riffs that most recall Jake’s time in Screen Vinyl Image.

Blacklit

Chris Koza takes influences from his former shoegaze band We Miss The Earth and mixes it with squelching acid 303’s and punishing beats. Songs like After Dark and Light Fades From Me have combinations of synthwave hooks and Chicago inspired rhythms reminiscent of a Ron Hardy mix begging to be cranked loud.

Glow Chatter and Unrequited Acid are filled with spacious Tin Man leaning 303 basses against rhythmic synths and filtered pads. Blacklit rides a line between looking to the past and listening to the current and it comes clearly across on these four songs.
